License QualificationsTo Qualify for a Real Estate Salesperson License You Must: Be 18 years of age or over when you apply for your license. (You may take the exam before you are 18, but you must turn 18 within six months after you pass the exam.) There is no residency or citizenship requirement. Be a person whose application has not been rejected for licensure in this or any other state within 12 months prior to the date of application, and whose real estate license has not been revoked in this or any other state within two years prior to the date of application. Successfully complete the Commission-approved 60-hour pre-license course in real estate education during the 12 months prior to taking the salesperson examination and complete the 36 hours of practical training before applying for a license. Undergo a State & National Criminal History Background Check including fingerprinting. Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination. Be sponsored by a broker after you pass the exam; you cannot apply for an inactive license. Obtain errors and omissions insurance (contact Rice Insurance 800-637-7319). (Persons with an active license in another state may apply by reciprocity or Rule 5.3 as applicable.) Consider Your TimeTable You have 1 year from the completion date of your first course in the pre-license series to complete all requirements and apply for a license. You cannot submit your application until you have been notified by the IREC that your background check is complete. Background Check: will take 8-10 weeks for completion and is valid only for 210 days |

In addition to the 60-hour pre-license course, students will be required to take the 36 hours of education that were originally required in the first 3 years. The new law will require that the three 12 hour courses (Listing Practices, Buying Practices and Developing Professional Conduct & Ethical Practices) be taken before a student can apply for a license.
