Choosing a Password

Password security can be a tricky balance between system security and user convenience.  On one hand, your password should be something you can easily remember.  On the other hand, passwords are an important aspect of computer security, and should be chosen with that in mind.  Here at ICAAR, we recommend you do what you can to make your password as secure as possible.

If security is your primary concern, the safest solution for choosing a good password would be to use a randomly generated or seemingly random password that:

  • Is at least 6 characters long, and longer if possible.
  • Contains a mix of upper and lower case letters.
  • Includes numerals, special characters, and punctuation.
  • Is not based on any personal information.
  • Is not based on any dictionary word.

One way to create passwords that are both strong and easily remembered is to create a password based on a song title, affirmation, or other phrase. For example, if the phrase were: "I want to use a secure password" then the password could become "Iw2u@Sp" or "IWant2UseASecurePW".

Should you forget your password, you may that request a new password be sent to you through your e-mail.  After logging in, you will have the opportunity to reset it.  ICAAR will not be able to retrieve individual passwords.
